A couple of weeks ago, my mom called me one night and asked if she could come down the next morning and spend the next several days with us and help me get things ready for the baby. I was so excited!! My Aunt Karen was coming down from Idaho to help her daughter for a few days and my mom was catching a ride down with her. Normally I would have been a little stressed to find out my mom was coming the next morning and trying to get things cleaned up (she is super clean and very organized....and....well....I am NOT!). However, this time I was just excited to come and have her help me out. Of course, the kids couldn't wait for Grandma to come!
We had a great time with my mom. She even ended up staying an extra day than planned and that was wonderful! While she was here, she did some deep cleaning for me. She cleaned above all of my kitchen cabinets and the decorations that were on top. She also cleaned the nasty ceiling fan in the dining room - which isn't easy to do on a vaulted ceiling - cleaned carpets, vacuumed stairs, helped organize baby clothes, scrubbed the bathrooms, washed walls and windows, and so much more. It was nice having Cinderella here to help us for a few days. :)
Of course we cleaned, but we also played and had some fun. One day, we went to Layton to my Aunt Kristol's and ended up spending the day there. Whenever I go to Kristol's, I always end up staying longer than I planned - and it had been a LONG time since I had been there last. Kristol had created a cute book documenting their sisters' retreat and it had arrived that day, so mom wanted to get her copy. Great excuse to head down! We also did some sewing while we were there. Kris showed us how to make pillowcases from fun material and they were so cute (now I wish I had a serger!). Kris and mom also helped me (ok, they basically did it all) make hooded towels for two of my sister-in-laws that recently had babies and embroider the baby names on them. Tiffani was wonderful. She watched the kids while we sewed.....and my kids LOVE Tiffani! It was relaxing and fun to spend the day there.
While mom was here, we had Peter & Joni come down for dinner. It is always fun to get together as a family (and eat!). Like usual, we were rushing to get dinner ready and everyone was waiting. I was a little stressed and I was tired. Maybe I can blame it on the pregnancy?! :) Anyway, Mike made a beautiful salad - primarily from stuff in our garden. He went to a lot of work cutting the lettuce and washing it and drying it to create his salad. As we were sitting down to eat, Mike was dishing up plates for the kids. He put a little bit of salad on Gavin's plate and Gavin immediately freaked out. He started throwing a tantrum about how he didn't want salad and that "mom said I could have whatever I want!" I hate it how the kids act extra stupid when company is over. It makes me more stressed. Mike told Gavin he didn't give him very much and he needed to eat some. I don't know if Gavin was then being brave or stupid, but he just blurted out (matter of factly, with his arms folded and pouting like a baby) "No Can Do!!"
I came unglued. What a brat. I am a lot like my dad - and that kind of comment is not acceptable. I jumped up and grabbed Gavin, dragging him off of the bar stool. He had a fist-full of salad and as I was dragging him down the hall - since he wouldn't stand up and go to his room - (and he is much heavier than I imagined, but I had to continue what I started) he was throwing lettuce all around. I got him to his room and we had a "chat". Obviously I was tired and probably just needed to go to bed. It was quite the site for everyone at the table watching this crazed 8-months pregnant mom dragging her 6 year old as he was throwing lettuce. Thankfully mom, Peter, & Joni have a sense of humor. :)
The other big event that took place while my mom was here was the release of Breaking Dawn. Holy cow, it was hilarious to watch my mom get excited about this book! I had pre-ordered the book from Amazon months ago for her birthday. We thought it would automatically arrive on the release date. When she decided to come spend the week with me, she realized her book would arrive back in Idaho while she was down here - but she was a trooper and said it would be ok (yeah right!) The Wednesday before the release date, I got an email letting me know the book was set to arrive on the 6th (which is actually 4 days after the release date). I was a little annoyed! However, the email said since I used Amazon Prime, I could cancel my previous order, reorder and choose release-date delivery. Obviously, that is what I did - and mom's book was then sent to my house on Saturday. I have never seen anyone so giddy over a book before....I don't even think my kids get that excited at Christmas! :) Here is a slideshow documenting Debbie's Breaking Dawn adventure.....priceless!
Needless to say, mom locked herself in the basement and read her book quite often the next couple of days. The kids really weren't sure what all the excitement was about and why we told them to stay away from grandma. :) She would read chapters and then text her sisters (as they were all reading the book!). It was so funny. It wasn't surprising she finished the huge book in just a few days. (I will admit it.....I ended up buying the book at Costco so I could read it and finish the series - or follow the Cult as I kept saying! I just wasn't into it as much as my mom and everyone else in America! :))
